Made a Difference to People and Profit

We were concerned with the increase in absences from the workplace from occupational health issues ranging from back pain to stress, resulting in low morale and a financial value on the working days lost – estimated at around £1 million a year on a total of 1,900 employees.

The board appointed LCS to develop a new occupational health programme with our health and safety advisors’ in-house team. The team lead by LCS spoke with staff at all levels and departments.  The group talked openly about health issues, asked the right questions, and gave out essential advice, encouraging employees to talk about mental wellbeing and economic/musculoskeletal challenges.

We redesigned our house materials and approach to managing stress and wellbeing from talks with employees and presented evidence. LCS further supported in the redevelopment of our induction health and safety training to give the same amount of focus as safety, as we often forget the health of health and safety. 

This has resulted in

  • 12 days off the average musculoskeletal case
  • Self- help materials in-house and training managers to tackle stress and other mental health issues
  • Employees reporting and using materials
  • Boards efforts to raise awareness and take the stigma out of mental health issues
  • Embracing new technology and innovative approaches
  • New cases and days lost through mental health-related absence have both been cut by 25 %
  • Low-cost solutions to make this happen saving over £ 1 million a year
  • Made a real difference in productivity and our employees’ lives
